Hints For New Freelance Workers

job1 Hints For New Freelance WorkersWith the economy struggling, more and more people are making the decision to become freelance. There are a number of ways that people can get into it, from taking on a small project while at university or after working in a company for a number of years, taking on some extra work outside of the regular work day. Perhaps you have decided it is time for a change, if so here are a few tips for you starting your freelance career.

A freelancer will often be cheaper than an agency as they will have lower hourly rates. This is often why a client will use them. If you make sure that you bill any clients as you finish particular points in the project instead of all at the end this will help to spread the cost for your client and also help you have a regular income from the project. Freelancers can often struggle with the billing and accounts so make sure you draw up good plans with your clients to make contingencies for extra work or any more hours that you might have to do over and above what you originally charge for, if it is not work set out at the start of the project.

You may have thought that a freelance job would be a chance for you to break out from the nine to five routine and work how and when you wanted, but you will find that clients might not be as flexible. You have to remember that your clients will still be working nine to five and so will be expecting you to be available to speak to them during the day about your projects. You will be expected to work to their company policies and procedures and listen to their input from other company employees. In order to help the working relations it is always a good idea to set out some terms in a contract prior to the start of any project.

Try not to get distracted by family if you are working from home. At home it is important to have your own space set aside which you can switch off from family life or housework once you get into that space. Set up your office space so it has all the equipment you might need to carry out your work and set yourself working hours that everyone is aware of so you cannot be disturbed and you yourself will make sure you actually get on with your work rather than doing other side jobs.

A lot of problems can be sorted out before any work starts by ensuring a proper contract is in place that will cover any problems that could arise. If your client does not provide you with one then it is worth getting one written up for you to give them. This will help to get the terms set down so both parties know the specific work that you will be doing, the terms you are working under and the compensation for doing the work. Even if you are working from home as a freelance web designer or freelance graphic designer, it is important to still do the ground work to ensure that your employment is conducted in a proper manner.

Freelancing can be enormously enjoyable if you become successful. In the internet age, numerous companies are on the lookout for good freelancers. Think of all the local companies and shops on your street that would benefit from having your services. Don’t be shy about it, promote your services and you may be freelancing before you know it.
