Write From Home: Your Own Writing Jobs

If you want to make money writing, you can. In this article, we’ll look at how you can find time, even if you’re sure you have no time at all.

My own magazine writing career started over 30 years ago. In those days, I wrote short articles for women’s magazines. Most of my articles were less than 1000 words long. It was easy to write them in tiny blocks of time (ten minutes or so), which I snatched while my children were playing after-school sport, or in my lunch hour at work. Here’s how you can create your own writing jobs too.

1. Determine what you know about and what interests you. Are you employed in real estate? Do you enjoy sports? Do you grow heirloom tomatoes? Would you like to know more about how to sell homes? Choose a topic for which to write a short two-page article (about 1,000 words or so).

2. Find publications which are interested in your subject. For example, for an article on the best new products for Siamese cats, look online and at the pet store for magazines devoted to cats. Which ones would be most likely to use such an article? Study the publications and get their writers’ guidelines. Follow those instructions to the letter, including sending a query letter, if specified.

3. Write the article in the style of the magazine you hope will publish it. Keep in mind the word count and other instructions from the writers’ guidelines. Make sure you explain all terms clearly. A good rule of thumb is to write as if you were talking to a friend, using the same words you would speak. Try to include all the information a newcomer to the subject would need.

4. Be sure to proofread your work several times. Is it any different from articles in that magazine? Set is aside for a day and then check it again. Ask someone else for their honest opinion. Keep revising the article until it is perfect. It should be free of typos, misspellings and grammatical errors. Make sure all the necessary information is included.

5. Submit the article. The writers’ guidelines will tell you to whom you need to send the article. Briefly explain what the article is about and why you selected that particular magazine to publish it.

6. Rinse and repeat. While your article may be accepted on the first try, it is very possible it won’t be. If the editor offers constructive criticism, revise the article and try again. Or send it to a different publication.

It is possible to make money writing about what you know. Why not get started today?
